The business started in 1969 with the opening of Penneys in Mary Street, Dublin in 1969. In 1973, the first Primark store was opened in GB. Over the years, the company has developed both sides of the business Penneys (operated by Primark) in Ireland and Primark in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF). Renowned companies/brands within the group include “Allied Bakeries Ltd”, “British Sugar plc”; “Ryvita”, “Twining Tea” plus other associated businesses.
In 1995, the company acquired the “One Up” chain from BHS with sixteen stores and in 1999 added eleven further stores, which previously traded under the Living brand, to the group. During 2000, Primark acquired six C & A stores. In early 2005, the company acquired six Alders stores and in July 2005 announced the acquisition of 120 Littlewoods stores.
The company employs over 14,000 people and has over 2.4 million square feet of retail selling space. The company operates over 125 stores, 35 in Ireland, and 74 in England & Wales, 7 in Northern Ireland and 9 in Scotland.
Targeted at the young fashion conscious under 35-s, Primark offers fashionable quality merchandise at value for money prices. Key departments include women’s wear; menswear; children swear and footwear. In recent years, Primark has developed brands such as Secret Possessions, Atmosphere, Cedarwood State, Rebel, Young Dimensions, Early Days and Primark Essentials.
Primark has plans for further expansion into new locations, including Spain in 2005, and the refurbishment of existing stores. Upcoming refurbishments in Ireland include Dundalk, Wexford, and Letterkenny. New stores are planned in the future for: Swords in north Co Dublin, Cardiff, Leeds, Bristol, Bromley, Leicester and Hull.
