The Department for the Economy has launched a public appointments competition to recruit six Members to the Governing Body of South Eastern Regional College
The Further Education (FE) sector in Northern Ireland (NI) provides skills and opportunities that are essential to building a modern economy and to creating a stronger, more inclusive society. FE Colleges in NI play a vital role in delivering the skills our economy needs by directly supporting learners and businesses.
The role of a Member of a Governing Body provides an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development of a dynamic, vibrant FE sector in NI.
People with a wide range of skills, experience and backgrounds who currently are, or have been, engaged or employed in the world of business, industry or any profession are encouraged to apply. This is a basic eligibility requirement for the role. Applications are welcome from those with public sector, private sector and voluntary sector backgrounds.
The Governing Body of an FE College is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective management of the College, including its financial performance and the quality of its teaching and learning.
The South Eastern Regional College appointments will be made after the conclusion of the appointment process. The term of appointment for each post is four years. The Department would particularly welcome applications from women, people with a disability, those from ethnic minorities and young people, as they are currently under-represented.
A Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS), for applicants with a disability, will operate for this competition.
On average, the successful candidates can expect to commit around one day per month to College business. This includes attendance at 12 - 15 full (evening) Governing Body meetings per year, representing the College at meetings and public events, as well as interaction with the Department.
The position is remunerated at the following rate:
- £250 for a Governing Body meeting;
- £150 for a committee meeting or event sanctioned by the Chair.
Governing Body Members are also eligible to claim allowances, at Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) rates, for travel and subsistence costs necessarily incurred on Governing Body business.
Appointment will be made on merit from those individuals who best satisfy the eligibility criterion and the four essential criteria (1. Contribution to Strategy, 2. Finance, 3. Leadership and Governance and 4. Applying Specialist Skills).
A background in education is not required also there is no requirement to have any formal qualifications in order to apply.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Tuesday 28th January 2020.
